One Workshop for the Whole Job

Cars rarely give you much notice. A brake pedal starts feeling soft. The air conditioning blows warm on the first hot day. A warning light comes on halfway to work.

At Dan's Automotive, we handle those jobs and the planned ones in the same workshop. Our automotive services in Townsville run from general servicing and diagnostics through to brakes, clutches, suspension, auto electrical and air conditioning. Doing it all in-house means we're not sending your car across town for a second opinion, and we can usually tell you what's going on the same day.

If your car is still under warranty, our logbook servicing keeps that intact and stamped. Call (07) 4725 5868 to talk it through, or book online any time.

General Servicing

A regular service is the cheapest way to look after a car, because it catches small faults before they turn into big bills. We check oil and filters, fluids, belts, hoses, tyres and brakes, then road test the car before it goes back to you.

If we find something outside the scope of the service, we'll call you before touching it rather than adding it to the invoice.

Vehicle Diagnostics & Fault Finding

A warning light tells you a system has logged a fault. It doesn't tell you which part failed, or why.

We plug into the vehicle's computer, read the codes, then test the components those codes point to before we recommend replacing anything. Guessing at parts gets expensive quickly, so we'd rather spend the time finding the actual cause and give you a clear answer on what needs replacing.

Brake Repairs & Servicing

Brakes wear gradually, so the change is easy to miss until stopping distances get noticeably longer. Squealing, grinding, a soft pedal or a shudder through the steering wheel are all worth booking in for.

We inspect pads, rotors, drums, lines and fluid, then machine or replace rotors where needed and bleed the system properly afterwards. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, so we check its condition as part of every inspection.

Clutch Repairs

A clutch that slips under load, judders on take-off or bites right at the top of the pedal travel is usually on its way out. We'll confirm whether the problem is the clutch itself, the hydraulics or the release bearing before quoting, because the three are often confused.

Clutch work is labour-intensive, so it's worth knowing exactly what you're paying for. We'll explain what we found and what the replacement involves.

Suspension & Steering

Worn shocks, bushes and ball joints change how a car sits and how it responds, usually so gradually that you adjust to it without noticing. Uneven tyre wear, a wandering steering wheel, clunks over speed humps or a nose dive under braking are the common signs.

We inspect the whole assembly, replace what's worn and check the alignment afterwards so the new parts don't wear out early.

Cooling System

North Queensland heat is hard on cooling systems, and an overheating engine can turn into a head gasket or a warped head very quickly. We pressure test radiators, hoses, water pumps, thermostats and caps to find leaks that only show up under load.

Coolant also breaks down over time and stops protecting against corrosion, so we check its condition and replace it at the manufacturer's interval.

Auto Electrical

Modern vehicles run dozens of electrical circuits, and a fault in one can present as something completely unrelated.

We trace wiring faults and test alternators, starter motors and charging systems. We also sort out lighting and power window problems and diagnose parasitic drains that flatten a battery overnight. Electrical work is a matter of methodical testing rather than swapping parts, so we follow the circuit until we find the break.

Timing Belt & Chain

On an interference engine, a snapped timing belt means valves meet pistons and the repair bill jumps from a service item to an engine rebuild. Manufacturers set a replacement interval in kilometres and years, and the years matter as much as the distance because rubber perishes.

We replace belts, tensioners and idlers together, since a new belt on a worn tensioner won't last. Chains are checked for stretch and rattle.

Safety Certificates

Queensland requires a safety certificate before you sell a registered vehicle or transfer it to a new owner. We inspect tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, seatbelts, the body and the windscreen against the state's standards, then issue the certificate.

If something fails, we'll tell you exactly what needs fixing so you can decide whether to have us carry out the work or handle it elsewhere.

Pre-Purchase Inspections

Buying a used car privately means trusting the seller's word about how it's been looked after. A pre-purchase inspection replaces that with a mechanic's assessment.

We check the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, tyres and body, then look for signs of previous accident repair and road test the vehicle. You get a clear picture of the car's condition and any work it's likely to need, before you commit.

Battery Testing & Replacement

Batteries in this climate often fail without much warning, and heat shortens their life more than cold does. Testing takes a few minutes and tells you whether the battery is genuinely on the way out or whether the charging system is the real problem.

We test the battery, the alternator and the starter draw together, then fit and register a replacement if that's what's needed.

Air Conditioning Servicing & Regas

Car air conditioning loses a small amount of refrigerant every year through normal seal permeation, so cooling performance drops gradually rather than all at once. We check system pressures, leak test and regas with the correct refrigerant for your vehicle.

If the system has lost gas quickly, that points to a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak just means repeating the job next season.

General Mechanical Repairs

Not every job fits a category. Exhausts, radiators, water pumps, fuel systems, transmissions, engine mounts and the assorted rattles that only happen at 60km/h all come through the workshop.

If you're not sure what's wrong, describe what the car is doing and we'll work it out from there. We'll give you a diagnosis and a price before we start, not after.

FAQs

Most manufacturers set an interval of every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres or every 6 to 12 months, whichever comes first. The handbook is the authority for a specific vehicle, and cars that do a lot of short trips or dusty running often need servicing at the shorter end of the range.
